The Unknown 13th God or Agnostos Theos. The entity of many names, an Unknown God worshiped to an unknown end…the game is a afoot.
It also a theory by Eduard Norden first published in 1913 that proposed, based on the Christian Apostle Paul’s Areopagus speech in Acts 17:23, that in addition to the twelve main gods and the innumerable lesser deities, ancient Greeks worshiped a deity they called “Agnostos Theos”, that is: “Unknown God”, which Norden called “un-Greek”. In Athens, there was a temple specifically dedicated to that god and very often Athenians would swear “in the name of the Unknown God”. Apollodorus, Philostratus and Pausanias wrote about the Unknown God as well.
According to the book of Acts, contained in the Christian New Testament, when the Apostle Paul visited Athens, he saw an altar with an inscription dedicated to that unknown god (possibly connected to the Cylonian affair), and, when invited to speak to the Athenian elite at the Areopagus, he gave the following speech: Acts 17:22-31 Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus, and said, “You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’…please watch the video for more information.
There is also a Hymn to an Unknown God which I have added for you;
